TITLE : Zero-configuration debugging with XDebug and PhpStorm 2.0 | PhpStorm Blog
Does phpstorm support the ability to force a breakpoint that executes during runtime? PHPed has a gdebugBreak();h function that you can insert into code and when that code is executed it automatically starts a debug session at that point in code. This is handy very handy in many situations........

On its own, this does not tell you much apart from the fact that one of your objects is leaking because an interface pointer has not been released. However, the Allocation number allows you to automatically break when that interface is obtained by setting the m_nIndexBreakAt member of the CComModule at server startup. This in turn calls the function DebugBreak() to force the execution of the code to stop at the relevant place in the debugger. For this to work, the program flow must be the same........

TITLE : Debugging C/C++ with Visual Studio, Part 4: Setting up Code for the Debugger - Cprogramming.com
Calling __debugbreak() can be used to generate a software breakpoint. This function is designed to be portable between platforms. You could also use the Win32 version DebugBreak() but it is not portable. So once you call __debugbreak() what happens from there? An exception is thrown and your program stops execution. This gives the programmer the opportunity to use Visual Studio to 'attach' to the process that is running the executable........
http://www.cprogramming.com/tutorial/visual_studio_debugging_code_setup.html
TITLE : Debugging C/C++ with Visual Studio, Part 4: Setting up Code for the Debugger - Cprogramming.com
A practical example of using __debugbreak() would be to debug a service. You cannot launch a service directly from Visual Studio; it must be launched with the Service Control Manager. So there is no way to directly debug it from the IDE. You must 'attach' to the process in order to debug it. The problem with debugging a service using this method is that you cannot debug the service from launch; it will simply launch and begin its run state........

http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
While developing and debugging, I regularly use Win32?s DebugBreak() and assertions to either break into or launch the registered debugger. Most of the time this works fine and accomplishes what I need. However, if the DebugBreak() call happens to lie within an exception handler, the call may be caught (and ignored) rather than launching the debugger as intended. To solve this problem, I devised a method which unconditionally breaks into the debugger........

About DebugBreak().......
http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
The primary purpose of DebugBreak() is to signal the debugger that an event has occurred. Internally, DebugBreak() raises the STATUS_BREAKPOINT (0x80000003) exception. The breakpoint exception is treated as any other: if unhandled, the application is terminated; however, it is typically (and often transparently) handled by the debugger........
http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
Although all Windows platforms support DebugBreak(), under x86 builds it is advantageous to directly issue the breakpoint exception via the INT 3 opcode. The benefit is that the debugger will stop in application code rather than in system-level code within DebugBreak()........
http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
Additionally, certain Visual C++ library components internally use DebugBreak() (under x86 builds, MFC and the C runtime library use the INT 3 opcode rather than an actual DebugBreak() call, however the end result is the same), specifically assert() under the C runtime and ASSERT() under MFC. In debug builds, both of these functions eventually end up issuing a breakpoint exception if the assert condition fails........
http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
Although exception handling is nothing new, it is becoming more and more prevalent in application code. Because of this and without careful consideration, DebugBreak() calls can often be transparently handled by such exception handling clauses, thus defeating the overriding purpose of DebugBreak(). For a number of reasons, it is not always practical or efficient to special-case breakpoint exceptions, therefore I came up with the solution presented below........

What I needed was a method to guarantee that just-in-time debugging was activated for a DebugBreak() call. Although the actual process is relatively straightforward, a truly platform-independent implementation is clouded by the system differences between Win95/Win98 and NT........
http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
Basically, there are two required steps to ensure that JIT is successfully activated during a call to DebugBreak(): if the current process is not running under the control of a debugger, launch the registered JIT debugger to attach and debug the process, then issue the DebugBreak() call. The debugger will then trap the call; execution will stop at that point, thus allowing further interactive debugging of the application........
http://www.drdobbs.com/forcing-a-debugbreak/184416530
TITLE : Forcing a DebugBreak() | Dr Dobb's
Once launched, it is necessary to wait for the debugger to assume control of the process before issuing the DebugBreak() call. This is done by waiting on the event handle that was initially passed to the debugger on the command line. All that remains once the event is signaled is to issue a breakpoint exception, at which point the process is suspended and the debugger gains control........

isdbgex.cpp (Listing 2) implements a function called IsDebuggerPresentEx(), which ForceDebugBreak() uses to determine whether or not the process is executing under the context of a debugger. In that same file, IsDebuggerPresent95() uses undocumented process fields and flags to determine whether a Win95 process is currently being debugged. The breakpoint() function flushes output buffered and any other buffered data to the Web browser. The call to sleep(.1) is necessary so the server has enough time to flush the data out to the Web browser before code execution is halted at debugBreak(), a function known internally to the PHP debugger extension you downloaded earlier. Thus, calling breakpoint() flushes data from HTML blocks, print() and echo() statements to the browser, then halts code execution........
