ExtDeviceMode() and DeviceCapabilities() are supplied by the printer drivers rather than GDI. Because not all drivers support these functions, applications must ensure that the driver supports these functions before attempting to use them........

Correct usage of ExtDeviceMode() and DeviceCapabilities() to query and/or modify printer settings is a multistep process that is not fully explained in the SDK documentation........

Because these functions reside in the printer driver rather than GDI, applications must first get a handle to the driver, typically by calling LoadLibrary(), and then use GetProcAddress() to get the address of the driver's ExtDeviceMode() and/or DeviceCapabilities() functions. If GetProcAddress() returns NULL for either of these functions, then that function is not supported by the driver........

A driver may support modifying a certain DEVMODE field without supporting all of the available settings for that field. For example, an application cannot use ExtDeviceMode() to switch to Executive paper if the printer only supports Letter, Legal, and A4 paper sizes. Applications should use DeviceCapabilities() to query the driver for this type of information. For an example of using DeviceCapabilities(), please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:.......

TITLE : c# - DeviceCapabilities generates error: data is invalid - Stack Overflow
I want to get a printer's list of paper source, paper size, etc. I slightly modified the codes from http://www.pinvoke.net/default.aspx/Enums/DeviceCapabilities.html?diff=y The codes sometimes work, sometimes not. The proplem is DeviceCapabilities(DeviceName, strPort, DeviceCapabilitiesFlags.DC_BINNAMES, (IntPtr)null, (IntPtr)null) returns -1. the last error is "data is invalid" Restart computer may not solve the problem. Once getting the problem, next time maybe OK maybe not........

If my memory serves me correct you call DeviceCapabilities twice. First to get paper settings int nPaperCount = DeviceCapabilities(sPrintName, "LPT1", DC_PAPERS, NULL, DeviceMode); then again to get paper types DeviceCapabilities(sPrintName, "LPT1", DC_PAPERS, moPT, &DeviceMode); ? aggaton Nov 11 '15 at 3:52.......

TITLE : How to Determine Whether a Printer Supports Color
I always had a gut feeling that the information I needed was at a very basic low level. With some research, I stumbled across the DrvDeviceCapabilities() function. This function comes from the Microsoft DDK (Driver Development Kit). Microsoft recommends each hadrware vendor export this function from their drivers to provide requested information about a printer's capabilities. By using this function, it's pretty easy to determine color capabilities........
