TITLE : Simplify Native Code Access with JNA Blog | Oracle Community
C Functions often use structs as arguments. But since Java does not have structs, JNA uses classes instead. Classes are closely related to structs, so the associated Java code looks intuitive, and works well. The following code extracted fromKernel32.java, the proxy interface for kernel32.dll, illustrates the conversion of struct SYSTEMTIME into a Java class to support the GetSystemTime()function........

At least at the time of Windows NT 3.1, 3.51, and 4.01, the GetSystemTimeAsFileTime() API was the fastest user-mode API able to retrieve the current time. It also offers the advantage (compared with GetSystemTime() -> SystemTimeToFileTime()) of being a single API call, that under normal circumstances cannot fail........

TITLE : Using PInvoke To Call An Unmanaged DLL From Managed C++
For my first example, I'm going to use GetSystemTime(). The documentation tells you that it takes an LPSYSTEMTIME, which it fills with the current UTC time. The documentation tells you the name of the function, the parameters it takes, and the fact that it's in kernel32.lib. (You can't use the version in the .lib file, but there's a corresponding kernel32.dll that you can use.) This is everything you need to declare the function prototype in an unmanaged application, like this:.......

TITLE : Using PInvoke To Call An Unmanaged DLL From Managed C++
The DllImport attribute tells the runtime that this function is in a DLL, and names the DLL. The extern C takes care of the rest. Now you need to teach the compiler what a SYSTEMTIME pointer is. By clicking on LPSYSTEMTIME on the help page for GetSystemTime(), you can find a definition of the SYSTEMTIME struct:.......

TITLE : Using PInvoke To Call An Unmanaged DLL From Managed C++
If you copy and paste this struct definition into a Managed C++ application, it won't compile - WORD is a typedef that isn't automatically usable in .NET applications. It just means a 16-bit integer, anyway, and that's a short in C++. So paste it in (before the prototype for GetSystemTime()) and change all the WORD entries to short........

TITLE : Using PInvoke To Call An Unmanaged DLL From Managed C++
The GetSystemTime() function involved a struct, and once you made a managed-code version of the struct definition, it was simple enough to work with. Things are little trickier when the DLL function you want to call works with a string. That's because string manipulation is a bit of a technology museum itself........

The five Win32 timing functions provided by the base API (as implemented in KERNEL32.dll) are GetTickCount, GetSystemTime()/GetSystemTimeAsFileTime() (see the section "System Time"), QueryPerformanceCounter(), GetThreadTimes(), and GetProcessTimes() ? these are shown in Table 1, along with the commonly used timeGetTime() function provided by the Windows MultiMedia API, in WINMM.DLL. GetSystemTime() retrieves the current system time and instantiates a SYSTEMTIME structure, which is composed of a number of separate fields including year, month, day, hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. A peer function, GetSystemTimeAsFileTime(), retrieves the current system time in a single 64-bit argument (in the form of the Win32 FILETIME structure), measured in 100ns intervals. See the previous section "System Time" for a discussion of their implementation relationship........

TITLE : Open source Java projects: Java Native Access | JavaWorld
If you look under "How To Get Started Using JNA" on the Java Native Access homepage you will see a simple JNA usage example based on the Windows GetSystemTime() API function. The example focuses only on the essentials of JNA, and so it is somewhat incomplete. I'll start this introduction to JNA with a more complete Windows-based example that builds on that one........

TITLE : Open source Java projects: Java Native Access | JavaWorld
Before using JNA to access GetLocalTime() from a Java program, you need to know the name (and possibly location) of this function's Windows Dynamic Link Library (DLL). As it turns out, GetLocalTime() is located in the same DLL as GetSystemTime(), which happens to be kernel32.dll. You also need to know the C-based declaration for GetLocalTime(). The declaration is shown in Listing 1........

The GetSystemTime() example on the JNA homepage reveals that you must allocate an instance of the native library using the previously declared interface.
