TITLE : Safari | Linux Socket Programming by Example -> Consulting the /etc/protocols File
Sometimes it is necessary for an application program or utility program, which can work with multiple protocols, to look up a protocol by name. While this can be done by using the previous functions, getprotobyname(3) saves the programmer some effort. The function prototype is as follows:.......

TITLE : Beej's Guide to Network Programming
It used to be people would hardcode these values, and you can absolutely still do that. (domain is PF_INET or PF_INET6, type is SOCK_STREAM or SOCK_DGRAM, and protocol can be set to 0 to choose the proper protocol for the given type. Or you can call getprotobyname() to look up the protocol you want, "tcp" or "udp".).......

TITLE : Beej's Guide to Network Programming
Finally, the protocol parameter tells which protocol to use with a certain socket type. Like I've already said, for instance, SOCK_STREAM uses TCP. Fortunately for you, when using SOCK_STREAM or SOCK_DGRAM, you can just set the protocol to 0, and it'll use the proper protocol automatically. Otherwise, you can use getprotobyname() to look up the proper protocol number........

TITLE : What's File Descriptors and Sockets ?
The protocol specifies a particular protocol to be used with the socket -- for TCP/IP use 0. Actually there's another programmers interface getprotobyname(3N) that provides translates protocol names to numbers. It's an interface to the data found in /etc/protocols -- compare with the translation of service names to port numbers discussed above........

To create a UDP socket, call socket() with an address family of AF_INET, a socket type of SOCK_DGRAM, and the UDP protocol number. The AF_INET and SOCK_DGRAM constants are defined and exported by default by the Socket module, but you should use getprotobyname(" udp ") to fetch the protocol number. Here is the idiom using the built-in socket() function:.......

The getprotoent_r(), getprotobyname_r(), and getprotobynumber_r() functions are the reentrant equivalents of, respectively, getprotoent(3), getprotobyname(3), and getprotobynumber(3).
